How does protectedpdf Enterprise Edition Work?

Using protectedpdf Enterprise Edition, publishers can protect their valuable PDF content, in two stages:

  1. Create secure protectedpdf documents
  2. Manage reader access permissions

Document Protection

Protectedpdf Enterprise Edition empowers publishers to transform their standard PDF files into secure protectedpdf documents that can only be accessed by authorized readers. Typically, during the process of document protection, a publisher will

  • Select the standard PDF file to be protected
  • Set reader permissions (who can access the document and how they can use it)
  • Decide which pages to protect and which to leave open for preview
  • Design a customized login form and embed it within the document

Permissions Management

Even after a protectedpdf document has been distributed, the publisher can edit, add and revoke reader rights or change the document’s status. So, for example, a publisher can, at any time

  • Set how many different computers a reader’s login credentials may be used on
  • Limit the time period within which a reader may access a particular document
  • Retire a document, so that it cannot be accessed at all after a certain date
  • Update content by retiring a document and replacing it with a new version

Reader Authorization

ProtectedpdfProtectedpdf Enterprise Edition provides authorized readers with completely seamless access to protected content, in Adobe Reader, with no additional plug-ins or other software downloads. The reader experience with a protectedpdf document is as follows:

  • The reader opens the document in Adobe Reader – unprotected pages are now viewable but protected pages are covered by an obscuring layer
  • To remove the obscuring layer and access the protected content, the reader simply enters valid login credentials into the form embedded in the first protected page
  • In most cases, if the reader re-opens this document at a later date, the protected content will automatically unlock itself – credentials will not have to be resubmitted
